There's a bit of a weird heuristic test that I now think should be part of standard desktop environment testing: the toddler test. Can a typical installation withstand a toddler mashing keys for ten minutes and still recover and be usable afterwards? My toddler enjoys testing Gnome on this regularly. Gnome is often just not up to this task and becomes completely unusable until the computer is restarted.
